Are trees ticklish? I don’t know. I tried to tickle this one, but it didn’t laugh. I guess not.  It didn’t bark, either. :)

behr-coming-thru-1.jpg

Today I learned what happens when the raindrop friends (see yesterday’s post) get too cold. What happens, is that in cold weather they’re shivering so much that their little eyes have trouble focusing very well. Then they have trouble finding each other. So, what they do is they change their color to white, since white is much easier to see on the ground and in the trees than clear. Then the friends are happier and can still play and have fun ‘cause they can find each other again, even when they’re shivering. That’s sure nice of them to do that for their friends.  :)

Mom and Dad said we that we can’t call them “raindrops” when they are making themselves white, but we have to call them “snow”. I’m don’t get why we have to change their names, tho. Mom and Dad still called me “Behr Behr” when we were freezing cold today, and I didn’t change colors. I stayed black, and Mom and Dad could find me just fine. behr-in-snow1r.jpgSee, you can see me ok in the snow, huh?

Also, it was 29 degrees and windy, and I was shivering, but I guess since my eyes are bigger than raindrops’ eyes, I could see okay. I didn’t have to call Mom and Dad different names, either. I’m glad we aren’t raindrops, oops, snowdrops, or whatever they’re called. me-and-dad-in-the-snowr.jpgHere’s a picture of me with Dad.

I got to run and play and roll in the snow. I even dug holes in it! behr-digging-in-snow.jpg

After a while, tho, I decided I was shivering too much and wanted to get back in the car. Ok, really I was afraid I would have to change my color or my name if I shivered too much, and I didn’t want to. Mom and Dad put me in the car, and I fell asleep really fast. behr-sleeping-in-the-car.jpgAll that running in the snow wore me out!

So, good news! My name will stay Behr Behr, and I’m not going to make myself white after all. I learned the trick….just jump back in the warm car. I wonder why the raindrops don’t just go somewhere warm like that? Silly raindrops. Um, I mean snow.

Hey, I wonder what I have to call them at night?

floods.jpg

Enough of this silly rain and wind! It’s turned our yard into a little lake, making it not fun to roll in the grass right now. Frankly, I don’t like going potty on this little lake, either.

Meanwhile, I’ve been driving my parents nuts, hoping that they would take me for a walk if I bugged them enough. Sometime I get the “zoomies” and just zip around the house like a mad dog, under tables, around them, and everywhere I can fit. I run in big circles through the house, sometimes crashing into things. So, I think we should take walks even if it’s windy and rainy. If I were in charge, that’s what I would do.

Fortunately, we did get to walk today! I was so surprised when I saw the place where we normally walk, tho!!!!! Instead of dirt and plants, there is lots of fast moving water! Hey, I can’t pick up all the sticks in that!!

How did all of those silly drops of water become friends and stick together like that to make a creek? They must really like each other a lot. I don’t even get how they all found each other after they fell from the sky. I think I’d just be sitting on the ground complaining about how much it hurt to fall from the sky. I guess they all just look around for each other, become friends, and hook themselves together and start running. They make a lot of noise when there’s a whole bunch of them, like today. I think they had the “zoomies” too, only they get to zoom outside. They were running over the dirt, jumping rocks, picking up sticks, and stuff like I normally do. I wonder if they are puppy raindrops? :)

I don’t know about you, but there’s just something special about the time I spend outdoors with mom or dad. In fact, it’s the highlight of my day. Sure, I love my food and sticks and stuff, but it doesn’t even compare to our walks together. All the toys or food in the world can’t replace one walk together. It’s just our time alone, together, as friends.

There are so many things to explore as we take walks. There are trees and birds and lots of colors and smells. I come back inside feeling so refreshed and happy! It just feels like all of my senses come alive when I’m outside on a walk with my parents. I’ll bet my parents feel that way to, but I don’t know how to ask them in their language. I try, but I guess it all sounds like “woof woof” to them when I talk. Oh well.

I’m still not able to play with other puppies yet, ‘cause I haven’t had all my Parvo shots. Mom and Dad said I’ll have lots of friends when I’m done with the shots, tho. Then we can go for walks together, along with our moms or dads.

If there are any other puppies reading this, and you’re done with your shots, ask your mom or dad to spend some time with you today. Just show them your best , “PLEASE” with your eyes, ‘cause I don’t think they speak puppy language. Maybe go to the door and look outside or something, so they get the hint.

When you get back, make sure to give them lots of kisses to thank them!! You want them to keep it up as much as possible, so you’ve got to reward their good behavior. It’s how you train parents.

Have fun today (if it’s not raining!),

Gosh, all of this rain and wind is making my life boring lately! Normally I’m outside a lot, chasing leaves, finding sticks to run around with, digging holes, etc. Not now, tho.  It’s been raining for days now.  I’m starting to get a little tired of just playing with my toys and mom and dad.  Nothing against them, but I need to run around more!  How do other puppies who live where it rains a lot deal with all of this water stuff ?

I did get to play outside for a little bit today when it was only sprinkling, tho.  We went for a little walk, and found water that was moving on the ground! I’ve never seen that before!!  You can see the picture of me walking into this funny moving water.  I’m not even afraid of it, altho it was pretty cold.

I found some funny tracks that smelled good and I tried my hardest to find the animal who made them so we could play.  Mom said it was something called raccoon tracks. I wonder what kind of puppy that is?

Oooooh Dad, you are so tall up there!

If I eat lots of puppy food, will I grow big like you? I love my food., you know. My favorite times of the day are when you feed me. In fact, you can feed me all the time if you want. I would like that. The puppy food people called today. They said you can give me all the food. Well, I’m pretty sure they said that, or maybe I just dreamed it. :)

Who ME???

What makes you think I had anything to do with digging this hole ?

behr-in-carr.jpg

I’m discovering more and more perks in my new home as the weeks go by. One of the really fun ones is that my mom and dad drive me around places in my own car. When they say the words, “Let’s go!”, I’m out the door in a big hurry, practically dragging them to our car. I didn’t know that it’s their job to drive me to fun places, and frankly having my own chauffeur and car is great!!!

The car is funny. I get my own seat where I sit all by myself. I love looking out of the window and watching things fly by. If dogs could laugh, I think I would! For some reason, our car rolls smoothly down the road, while other cars fly by real fast. Sometimes people even fly by. Probably the funniest one is when trees fly by in the air! Ha! That’s great! When it’s dark outside, there are lights flying by in the dark sky. I’m not sure what they are, but they are cool. It keeps me pretty amused, so that I just sit there and stare out of the window in amazement. That’s why I like going in the car. Well, also because we go fun places.

Except today.

Today they tricked me. We got in the fun car like we always do, but instead of going somewhere fun, we went back to the dog hospital. I was worried that they might leave me there again. It turns out that it was just so they could poke those sharp things in me that sting (which I hate!). I can not for the life of me figure out why vets like to do that, but they do. Anyhow, I didn’t have to stay. I just hope they don’t try to trick me like that again. I mean, if it’s my car and they are going to drive me around in it, they should drive me places that are fun, right?

I’m hoping they will see my blog and get the hint.

Mom and Dad, if you are reading this, notice how much I was looking forward to our drive today. Can you see the look on happy anticipation on my face? Now, is that the look I had when we got home? Nooooo, I don’t think so, and you know it. Let’s not go to that vet place again, ok? No more tricks! I was not laughing today. Your job is to drive me to places puppies like, remember?

I do still love you, tho, especially because you give me yummy food and lots of toys. Especially the food.  Definitely like the food around here.Yeah, so maybe you aren’t so bad after all.  Ok, can I have some  more of that food now?

Behr Behr

behr-in-vest-cutout.jpg

OK, so now my parents are getting silly with me. I wonder if other puppies have to go thru these kinds of things? One night they put some funny boots on my feet and wanted me try to walk around. I have no idea why. My feet work just fine without them. I’m not sure if they just needed some entertainment or what. I had to pick up my feet really high to walk ‘cause it felt like I might trip over them or something. They seemed to think it was really funny. I, on the other hand, was not laughing. Fortunately for me, they didn’t get pictures of me trying to walk. (knowing them, they’d probably put the photos on here for the whole world to see!!) I sure hope they have a good reason for this kind of behavior.

On the good side, tho, they also bought me a nice warm fleece jacket. NOW we’re talking MY kind of style. Ok, so the color’s not my first choice, but at least it’s warm. I didn’t even fuss about this one. Actually, they let me wear it when I was really sick and shivering because I was starving and cold, so that was good. They get a few extra brownie points for that one. :) They said these would be really good for me when we go to the snow, but I have no idea what snow is or why we would go there. I’ll keep you posted when I find out.

Thank you Shelah for my new bandana! I got to wear it today when we went for a little hike. I think it makes me look so cool when on the trail.

I can’t wait to meet you!

I had a scary thing happen a few days ago. Boy was I ever sick! My mom and dad could tell I was REALLY sick ‘cause I didn’t even want to eat or drink. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I LOVE to eat!!!!! So I had to go to the dog hospital for two days, but I’m ok now. I didn’t even have to have surgery. YAAAAAY! I didn’t want my tummy cut open! I guess I’m going to have to stop eating rocks and stuff since that’s what got me in trouble and sick. It’s too bad, too, ‘cause I think they’re yummy. If my parents would just feed me the whole bag of dog food instead of silly bowls of it maybe I wouldn’t want all the rocks. They just don’t seem to understand that, tho.

To celebrate, I got to go on a really special trip to a place called Ventura Beach. My parents had a REALLY SPECIAL surprise waiting for me there. I couldn’t even believe my eyes when I saw her, but I got to see my mom’s human mom there! I was so excited that I jumped up and down and licked her a whole, whole bunch and wagged my little tail till it was tired. She was there for a dog show with my cousins, so I got to see her at her motor home. It was really fun to play in the little yard she made by the motor home. My cousin won an award called the “best puppy” award. He beat all the other puppies of all breeds and got a special ribbon. He’s REALLY big and pretty!

Anyhow, I’m happy to be back. I’ll keep you posted on my new adventures!

Our sweet little Behr Behr has been unable to write today because she has been in the hospital. I (mom) worked all night in the E.R. and came home to find her lying in her little bed looking quite sad. She normally jumps up to greet me and play, but not this time. She vomited and refused water to drink (she normally drinks volumes of water!).

We rushed to to the animal hospital who ran tests on her all day. Turns out that somehow she has found a little piece of fabric (source unknown) to eat, which has caused a partial blockage. Because it is not a complete blockage, we are giving it a little bit more time to see if it passes or if she will need surgery :(

Friday will be the deciding day. We certainly do not want her to have to have abdominal surgery at such a tender little age. She will turn 12 weeks on Friday (Jan. 18th).

Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Hopefully she will be back up and writing about her exploits soon!!

Thank you,

Behr’s mom and dad

Aren’t I just the cutest thing you’ve seen today?

im-getting-a-bath.jpgooh-warm-water-feels-great.jpgblow-dry-to-make-me-beautiful.jpg

My parents are the greatest! You know how we Great Danes LOVE warmth on a cold day? Well, after playing outside and taking a walk, sometimes they treat me to my own “doggie day spa.” It’s WONDERFUL!!! In fact, I like it so much that it helps me overlook my parents’ little quirks like the whole potty and leash thing. (see previous day’s post)

First we go into the little room with the giant bowl in it. They pick me up and put me in the bowl that they call a “bathtub”, whatever that means. Then they do something Heavenly….they pour warm water all over me. I LOVE that part a LOT!!!!!! I just sit there and go, “ahhhhhh.” Well, in doggy language, that is, but I’m telling you in people language so you know what I’m talking about.

Then for some reason they put slimy stuff all over me, but I don’t really mind because then they give me a whole body rub down. It’s all part of the spa thing, you know? My body feels so good with the warm water and rub down. Then there’s more of the wonderfully warm water. I normal feel pretty hyper, but after one of these spa treatments, I feel warm and cozy and all relaxed. I just want to snuggle into my soft bed and drift off into a peaceful sleep.

For the final treatment, they get this funny looking thing that looks like a big gun. Don’t worry; it only shoots warm air at me. :) I feel like a puppy princess as the warm air dries my hair and makes it all pretty and shiny.

There’s only one little problem about the day spa. It washes my favorite smell out of my hair, unfortunately. This spa doesn’t seem to have that on hand, so I have to go get it again after each of my treatments. Not a big deal, really, just a minor inconvenience.

My favorite fragrance blend is “Eau de Dirt & Grass” because it has that refreshing, earthy, natural smell that I love. You ought to try it sometime yourself. It’s naturally found in the outdoors, but you have to work at it to get all of the subtle notes that make it so great. It’s also a good way to have fun :)

Some of the humans I’ve met seem to have forgotten how to play with abandonment, like puppies do. They seem so boring and serious sometimes; it’s really quite sad to me. I don’t think they were supposed to be living that way. Go outside and look at everything in detail, like we do. Look at the sky, the leaves, the grass, and the rocks. They really are fascinating. Smell the fresh air and the plants. I know you’ll love it like I do, if you try it, that is.

You haven’t lost your childhood, really….

it’s still outside where you left it :)

What Behr was thinking as she looked at the valley below:

I wonder if those scary dogs are anywhere around?

I wonder if any of those houses down there have puppies in them?

I wonder how much puppy food is in those houses?

I wonder how I could distract mom and then sneak down there and get some of that food?

I’ll bet there are a LOT of cool sticks to bite down there!

I wonder if their moms and dads do weird things like tell them to “go potty?”  How silly is that?  Man, I was able to “go potty” just fine all by myself before I moved here, and I didn’t have to think about where I went, either.  They are so picky at my house, you know?

I wonder if the puppies who live down there have to do dumb things like wear tape on their heads like I do?

I wonder if they wear funny colored sticks on their heads too? Gosh, I guess I should be glad the puppies down there can’t see me with not only the tape on my head, but these strange purple sticks in my ears!  What do they think I am, a tree to decorate or something?

I wonder if the puppies down there have parents who are able to walk themselves without getting lost, or if they have to tie themselves to their dogs with a leash like my parents?

Behr’s rules regarding sticks, continued….

listening-to-momr.jpgnew-perspectiver.jpg

We had my first field trip today, (literally). We got to leave our yard today for one of my play times, and boy did I learn a lot!

We walked down a creek bed and I was found lots of new things that I’ve never seen before. I sure enjoyed walking along tasting and sniffing and biting everything, ‘cause that’s what we puppies like to do, you know? :)

Anyhow, I was a little nervous at first since everything was so new and different to me. I know my yard at home pretty well, where every stick and rock and place to dig are. I feel pretty comfortable there, but out here was a little scary to me. I finally started to relax ‘cause mom was with me and we were having fun walking.

Then it happened.

All of a sudden some really big dogs that had a yard next to the creek ran up to their fence and starting barking real mean at me. YIKES! I raced back to mom, shaking and crying ‘cause I was sure they were going to get me! Mom tried petting me and telling me it was ok ‘cause they were in a fence and wouldn’t get me, but you should’ve heard what they were saying. I’m telling you, they were really mean and scary!!!! :)L

Then mom had a really great idea!

She took me to a little hill nearby and we went up to the top. I was still scared and wanted to hurry away from the mean sounding dogs. Then when we got to the top, she sat down and held me close to her and talked to me calmly. You can see the picture of me listening to her talking to me, it’s the one with her knee in it :) She made me feel a lot better, and I stopped shaking and feeling scared.

Then I heard those mean ‘ole dogs barking again down below. Guess what? This time I wasn’t even scared, ‘cause when I looked down at them they had become REALLY TINY!!!! I like them better that way! I don’t know how my mom shrunk them, but she did! (Also, it helped that she was still petting me and talking to me quietly.) You can see the picture of me looking at the tiny little mean dogs down below, right next to the other picture.

I learned that the scary dogs looked a lot bigger when I was up close to them and that’s all I could see. Somehow, having mom with me and looking at the whole valley from the top of the hill made them suddenly look real tiny. When I looked at the whole valley, they were just little barking dots in the overall picture.

I learned today that if I have something big and scary happening to me, it’s a lot better for me to not face that scary thing all by myself. When I did that, the scary things seemed much, much bigger! Maybe we all need someone like my mom who can walk with us up a hill and look at that scary thing from a different viewpoint. I know I wouldn’t have done that all by myself. It didn’t make them go away, but I sure felt better having her with me there. I think it would be really sad for someone to not have anyone like her to just walk with them when they were scared.

I hope you have someone you can run to when you are afraid.

If not, maybe you can just talk to my mom and ask her to shrink the scary thing for you like she shrunk those dogs :) That works pretty well for me!

Behr’s rules regarding sticks:

If it’s on the ground, it’s mine!

If you dropped it, it’s mine!

If I found it first, it’s mine!

If it was buried and I dug it up, it’s mine!

If you had it but put it down, it’s mine!

If it fits in my mouth, it’s mine!

And finally, if I can reach it (even if it’s still attached to the tree), it’s mine!

puppy-puffs-image.jpg

Yes, indeed, Behr loves to eat..

A lot.

Even if it’s attempting to eat sticks and rocks and blankets and anything else she can find.

She sniffs the cabinet where her food is and barks, hoping we will feed her yet again. Then when we do feed her, she promptly takes her full little tummy and crawls into her snuggly little bed and goes soundly to sleep.

Isn’t she cute when she’s sleeping?

(Click photo to enlarge)

biting-treer.jpg  I think I can, I think I can, I think I can….I’m sure if I work on it hard enough, I can bite this giant stick and make it fall down so that I can run around  in the yard with it.  (and maybe even eat it when mom isn’t looking)

I love sticks, especially BIG ones like this one!

♥ Behr, the bite master

behr-digging-2r.jpgbehr-digging1r.jpgdirty-facer.jpg

Yipeee! The rain and wind finally stopped and I could play outside today! Today I discovered a new fun thing to do….digging! Wow, these big paws of mine can really move some serious dirt! It’s fun, because while I’m digging I find things that are buried in the ground that are fun to bite, like tree roots. Yum! Gotta hide them from mom, tho. She’s always taking them away from me. Sometimes I try to swallow them real quick when I see her coming :) Tricky, huh?

Anyhow, I love food so much that I’m hoping to dig my way to the dog food place so I can get some more. I’m sure that if I keep digging I can find the place where they keep all of the food for the dogs in the world. Mom and Dad have a cabinet with my food in it, but I can’t get in. It’s got some kind of tricky lock on it. That’s why I’m going to the big dog food place in the ground. Underground dog food. :)

I love toys, too. Maybe there are toys buried in there somewhere. Who knows? I never tried looking before. They might just be in there. You never know ‘till you look. That’s my theory, anyhow. :)

Behr Behr, the earthmover

tree-downr.jpg

We’ve been having a storm with lots of wind and rain here in CA.  The wind is really strong and makes loud noises. (that’s when all the sticks jump out of the trees ‘cause they’re ‘fraid)

This morning we went outside to play in the rain and chase leaves again, and this is what we found.  This tree must’ve been REALLY scared!!!!  It looks like it passed out and hit our fence.

I don’t pass out like that when I get scared.  I just run to mom or dad and they cuddle me and pet me and make me feel all better, and then I’m all brave again.

  Behr Behr the Brave ♥

behr-with-stickr.jpg One of the things that I love doing is scouting around the yard for leaves and sticks and rocks and just about anything else I can find to bite. I bite everything! Mom and Dad said I must be part piranha or something ‘cause I love biting things so much. It’s a little frustrating, tho, because Mom and Dad are always taking my newly found treasures out of my mouth after I went thru the trouble of catching them.

I just go find another one when they do :)

I discovered that the wind is my friend, tho. Wind is GREAT! The wind comes along and shakes the trees a whole bunch, and it makes all of the sticks and leaves real scared, so they jump out of the tree!! I guess they aren’t as brave as I am :)

Then I come along and pounce on the leaves and make them crunch real loud. That’s their way of saying, “uncle! You win, Behr!” That makes me happy. When they stop crunching, I go pounce on another leaf and another one and so on. Keeps me pretty busy.

I also watch for the scared sticks to jump out of the tree and I go pounce on them too. Then I parade around with my killed stick in my mouth and show everyone my stick that I conquered.

The wind is such a good friend of mine!

hey-whos-that-doggy-in-the-mirrorr.jpgwhos-that-doggy-in-the-mirror-r.jpg

I can’t figure this one out. In my old home where I was born, I had brothers and sisters that would see me and run to play with me. We really liked each other a lot!

I sure miss playing with them.

Anyhow, in my new home, there is another puppy the same size as me, but she won’t play with me at all! Boy is she strange! I’ve tried running up to her to get her to play, but when I run into her, she’s not soft and cuddly like me. She feels kinda cold and hard even. So I’ve tried barking at her, bringing her my toys to share, and even (as a last resort) biting her. Nothing works. It’s kinda creepy, but she seems to be following me around the house ‘cause I’ve seen her in more than one room, but she still won’t play with me. I don’t know what else I can do to be friends with her so we can play and have fun like puppies are supposed to do.

I hope humans don’t have these kinds of problems with other humans, ‘cause it doesn’t feel very nice. Seems like it would make their hearts hurt deep inside like it does mine when she does this to me (even tho I don’t let her know how sad and frustrated I feel). It’s a good thing I have a human mom and dad who love me and snuggle with me a lot. They tell me I’m beautiful (even when I rolled in the dirt!) and that they are glad they adopted me. Maybe she doesn’t have someone like that and it’s making her grumpy.

I hope you have someone who loves you, even when you’ve rolled in the dirt :)

Ok, so it’s not exactly my most flattering photo. Hey, no laughing there now. I’m pretty sensitive and don’t want my little feelings hurt. :)

So humans have bad hair days, I’m having a moment of “bad ears” here, and my human mom decided to take a picture of me. She and my human dad have been calling me “yoda” today. At least it’s only temporary, and I’ll be back to my beautiful self soon. Actually, my ears are fine, but I was having problems with the tape and they had to take them down for a bit.
