This Saturday, April 26th, I turned 6 months old. Yay!
To celebrate, Mom and I were going to have a day together outside, complete with photos with her new camera Dad got as a surprise for her. I was pretty excited, since mom hadn’t been feeling well for a while and I missed playing outside with her and going for hikes and stuff. Besides that, I feel real important, like a movie star or something when she takes lots of photos of me. She even had some fun things to dress me up with, like cool princess things
So, Dad went out of town to have breakfast with friends and mom fixed my breakfast. Yum. When they fix my food, I sometimes sit at the edge of the kitchen and drool even, ‘cause I can hardly wait for my “foodies.” As usual, I woofed my “foodies” down in a matter of seconds, even tho they do funny things to me, like putting a big chain in my bowl to try to slow me down. They’re so silly. After I eat, they have another silly rule that I have to go to my crate and take a little nap and not run around. When I wake up, then we can play.
Well, it was my special day, and I was super excited, so after eating, I got a sudden case of the “zoomies” and raced around the house until mom tackled me and put me in my crate. Darn. I decided that I was a big girl now and didn’t need a nap, so I started playing in my crate…jumping and rolling around. I was having a little party in my crate! Mom caught me and made me stop. Darn again.
A few minutes later, something bad started to happen to my tummy. I got super sick and started throwing up, and then it got worse….I don’t remember what happened then. Mom said she grabbed me out of my crate and I was drooling, unable to stand, and had diarrhea. She called the emergency animal hospital told them she was bringing me in. I guess the doctor said it was really bad, and they were going to have to do surgery. Poor mom was in the waiting room crying, calling Dad, and praying I would survive. Miraculously, right before surgery, my stomach apparently untwisted and I became instantly better!!!! I guess her prayers were answered, and everyone was real surprised!!! You should have seen mom’s face when I came walking out with the vet! When I got to go home, they told her I had to lie down quietly for 3 days and eat a bland diet and take some medicine. I have to tell you, tho, this REALLY scared me a whole bunch. I don’t even TRY to run around anymore. I’m really good and just go straight to my crate for my nap, no tossing and turning, no protesting. I’m just glad to be alive right now. I’ve really settled down a lot since “The Big Scare”, too.
I did still get my new leopard toy for my 6 month birthday. Mom took some pictures of me with it for you.
She also found a really funny dish called the “Slow Down Dish” that I have to eat out of now. It’s like a weird maze, and I have to work hard at getting my food out of it. I eat REALLY SLOWWWWWLY now.
So, that’s how I celebrated my 6 month birthday. Not what we had in mind, but I’ve learned my lesson, believe me. I’m just happy to still be here with my Mom and Dad, and to be in a home where I’m loved, in spite of the things I seem to get myself into. Mom says we probably make our vet’s mortgage payment, whatever that means. Glad we can help the vet out. So, hopefully Mom and I can still have that special play time one day soon. Sorry Mom and Dad for worrying you, and honest, I’ll really try to be a good girl when I eat now. I love you both 🙂
♥ Behr Behr
PS from Behr’s mom: Gastric torsion kills almost 40% of the dogs who get it, and very quickly. We are most fortunate to still have our little Behr Behr. Again. We are also very happy that after having her only a few days (and seeing how rambunctious she is…) we decided to buy pet insurance for the very first time. We send our claim forms to them in bunches, overwhelming the poor agent handling our claims. This whole incident seems to have settled her down quite a bit, tho. It’s like she has a whole new respect for life.
As a side note, her brother, Legacy, was at his first show the same day (with her sister, Fame). In between shows, he vomited 2 entire rope toys that his mom didn’t even know he had eaten, whole, and she’s a veterinarian. (and the breeder we got Behr from) She was thankful she didn’t have to do surgery on him on the same day as Behr almost had to have surgery. Wild bunch of pups, needless to say!! 🙂

Scary! My wife is always worrying that the Vs will get bloat if they get too crazy after eating (being a deep-chested breed they are prone to it). Glad Behr Behr recovered!

So scary!!! I’m so glad that Behr Behr recovered on her own. Do you plan to have her spayed? And if so, will you do the gastropexy at the same time? I have already talked to my vet about it and when Willow is spayed at 6 months, they are doing a gastropexy as a preventative measure. It’s sure a good thing you were there keeping such a close eye on her!
Willow is an extremely picky eater! I’m practically having to handfeed her to get her to eat. A happy medium would sure be nice 🙂
And by the way…..happy (belated) six month birthday!

My wife was wondering what food Behr Behr was eating the day she got bloat?
Hi, She was (and now is again) eating Eagle Pack Holistic Select large breed kibble with some re-hydrated Honest Kitchen (dehydrated raw veggies and fruits) mixed in. Nothing unusual, food was fresh. She just inhaled it and then ran around, unfortunately.

Wow, scary for you and Behr. From what I understand here insurances doesnt cover gastric torsion as its a known condition for Danes (oh if theres a loop hole they will wiggle out)…unlike america the vets here wont do preventative surgery …. would of been done last week when she was spayed if i had a choice…
Ours has covered other people’s danes’ GT, unless they have changed the policy (always possible) 🙂 We had already planned to have her stomach tacked at the time of spaying, but that won’t be for a while. We don’t want to spay her until her growth plates have closed, which is somewhere around 15 – 18 mon. old, usually. While we plan to show her, we don’t plan to breed her at all. If she would have had surgery this weekend, it would have required another surgery for the stomach tack, since it’s too early to do one (stomach still growing, can pull loose). It wouldn’t have been wise to tack Chels this early anyhow, so you don’t have to feel bad about that. Chels will probably be much taller than Behr because of her early spay.
Honest lucky you thought quick. My vet is 30min away so i have one in this town on standby for emgergencies… think that little rascal Behr better slow a little…
Yeah, that’s why we got her the “maze bowl” 🙂 We are fortunate to have an emergency clinic within minutes of our house, also. I had to make a 30+ min. rushed drive with my last dane, but she survived with surgery. That one had rolled around after eating (altho she ate slowly), while in the care of someone else.
….again, WordPress is acting up. It’s now putting your comment in bold italic and mine in regular, even tho I told it not too… grrrrrr
Well except for the humongous scare…Behr made 6months, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEHR, Chels does next Sunday…. does this mean we have an across the globe 1yr similtaneous party … 🙂
Thank you!!! We will have to have a trans global celebration at one year, for sure!!!! Maybe we can arrange it in blogdom 🙂

Boy, that sure was scary. I am glad everything turned out just fine. Sissy inhales her food too. Where did you get that bowl that slows them down. I think I’ll go now and look it up on the internet.
I got it at Petsmart. It’s a really big bowl tho (2 1/2 qt), which you probably wouldn’t need unless Sissy is eating a gopher 🙂 They make smaller ones that might work better for Sissy. One is called the Brake Fast bowl, one is the Eat Slow Bowl (such creative names…not) and another one is the Dog Pause bowl. Those are smaller than the one I got Behr Behr.

What a scary time! Poor Behr Behr. I’m glad it took care of itself.
Happy Birthday! Wish it had been better for you. The stuffies look like lots of fun.
The picture of the bowl wouldn’t come up. I’m curious to see it.
Barklove!

re-hydrated Honest Kitchen (dehydrated raw veggies and fruits)
Ah, the famous Green … Stuff!
Yeah, that would be it. Actually, Behr Behr really likes it. No matter how quietly I get the container out (to start soaking it to re-hydrate), she comes running, crying, begging, drooling, etc. I guess it only looks gross to us. 🙂 Actually, hers looks more like mud. Yours is prettier somehow. 🙂

Why don’t you spay till her growth plates have stopped growing… and why will Chels be taller as she is spayed now? Tis all confusing and she is my first…lol
I couldnt get two of the pics to show either
Abbey, the theories on how to raise great danes seem to change constantly, so not to worry. 🙂 One year they’ll say to feed them in raised dishes, the next year not. One year they say not to let them have water an hour before or after meals, then it’s ok. On and on it goes. (same with humans and what’s healthy to eat or not eat, frankly) Anyhow, I bought her from a vet who is the breeder, and she showed me what the growth plates feel like and said they shouldn’t really be spayed/neutered until they close. I looked that up, and did find some current articles that suggest that early spay/neuter causes the growth plates to stay open longer because the sex hormones promote their closure at the proper time (or something like that). The end result is that the dog is supposed to be taller, and possibly have a tendency toward joint issues with the early spay/neuter. Maybe Google “early spay and neuter” + growth plates or something. Anyhow, who knows? The advice may change next year 🙂 I’m not a vet.
Chelsea is beautiful no matter how tall or short she ends up. I love reading her blog, watching her grow, and seeing the photos showing how gorgeous she is. The point is that she has a loving home and lots of fun with you. That’s what matters. Behr’s mom 🙂

My human and I are so happy that Behr Behr had a happy six-month birthday after all. It must have been so scary for all of you. Full tummies and zoomies are not recommended for huskies either. My human worries about the same things. We have to try harder not to worry our humans.
Love,
Franki V and the human Connie
I didn’t realize that about Huskies. That must be a real challenge! It seems like Huskies might be a bit more active than danes even. Is that the case?

So sorry about the torsion scare!
I used to worry about that with my St. Bernard but he’s six now and doesn’t run around much. Still, if I even take him out for a walk after he’s eaten, I worry.
Moose still has trouble with swallowing things whole. He’s pooped out entire rubber gloves whole, cotton gloves whole (I finally figured out he has a fetish for mary kay hand moisturizer so I don’t use it any more). He’s pooped out socks whole, and (embarassing!) maxi pads he stole out of the trash. All of which I never knew he had eaten.
WOW!!!

I had to chuckle when reading your comment about what Behr eats……that is EXACTLY what Willow eats….EP holistic (same variety) and then started adding the honest kitchen re-hydrated to see if that would encourage her to eat……unfortunately, it has hardly made a difference.
Just like you said, so much of the information out there regarding care, feeding, etc. of danes is conflicting. Our vet is a dane owner and Willow’s “father” is owned by a vet……and two of the pups went to vets…..and even the information provided by these four very experienced dane owners is conflicting. In the end, what it all boils down to is that what works for one dog may not be what works for another dog!!
As a side note, I just received an email from Willow’s breeder saying that there have been reports of problems with EP kibble……she knows of 4 danes that have had problems and the manufacturer is cooperating in testing samples of the food from those dogs. I hope to goodness these are isolated incidents! Because Willow truly doesn’t seem to be doing well on the EP, I’m off to buy Innova today to see if she’ll do better with that. We have a doggie health food store here, owned by two certified canine nutritionists and they really encouraged the Innova over the EP…….told me that 4 other danes whose owners frequent their store here have their danes (starting as pups) on the Innova and all have done outstanding. So we’ll see……..I just want Willow to EAT!!!!
Hope Behr is continuing to do well!!
